This time I let my owner speak about her work, just for now:
"
Welcome to The Orchard Greyhound Sanctuary, located in farming country in southwest County Offaly. This small privately run sanctuary is where mainly ex-racing greyhounds become socialized and prepared for adoption into responsible Irish homes. Here, the dogs live in a home environment and have the run of almost 3 enclosed acres of grounds. OGS specialises in caring for greyhounds and other sighthounds found abandoned, abused, traumatized, or unable to cope with living in a kennel environment, though of course well-cared-for greyhounds are present here as well.
Contrary to popular myth, greyhounds make great pets. Once they are off a high-protein racing diet and in a normal home environment, most greyhounds adapt to home life very quickly. They are sensitive, loyal, intelligent dogs, generally quiet around the house, and require only normal amounts of exercise and food. Anyone adopting an OGS greyhound as a pet is provided with details about their new dog, along with training, exercise and feeding suggestions.
Greyhounds at the sanctuary learn their names and basic household manners, get socialized and housebroken, and in short become adoptable dogs. Many greyhounds live quite successfully with other dogs of all sizes and types, small children, cats, and even pet rabbits, though each dog is an individial and needs to be properly assessed in order to know their tolerance level. When you adopt a greyhound from OGS, there is plenty of back-up should your new dog encounter problems settling in his or her new home.
The Orchard Greyhound Sanctuary is also part of the Rescued-Greyhound Owners Network, an organization founded to promote greyhounds as pets and to help greyhounds in distress. The sanctuary is often a meeting point and rest place for other greyhounds being transported to safety by RGON. The dogs here are and have been supported by the Irish Greyhound Board, the Roscrea SPCA, the national ISPCA, private donations, some other Irish rescue groups, and private funding. "
